First Annual ICF Gala and Awards Ceremony a Huge Success

On October 1, the Iranian Cultural Foundation - Houston held its first gala with resounding support from the Iranian-American and Houston communities.  Hosted at the J.W. Marriott, the event was attended by over 150 supporters of the ICF as well as a number of dignitaries.  This year's award was given to prominent Iranian architect Houshang Seyhoun for a lifetime of achievement in art and architecture and a positive representation of Iranians across the world.   Unfortunately, he was not able to attend the event due to last-minute travel restrictions, but the ICF, in collaboration with the Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston endowed a scholarship in his name, which was awarded to a lucky recipient that evening.  The endowed scholarship will be funded through the support of the local community over the next three years and the $25,000 endowment will perpetually guarantee a $1000 scholarship to be awarded every year.  The vision of the endowed scholarship is to get the architects of the future to recognize the contribution of Iranian-Americans to the profession and to be inspired by their works.   A documentary about his life was also shown during dinner.  The annual gala is also ICF's annual fundraiser, and through generous donations, a silent auction, and a rousing live auction conducted by professional auctioneer and ICF board member Navid Zanjani, the bar was set high for future events with over $18,000 raised.  The evening concluded with the modern jazz sounds of Ziba Shirazi, who delighted the crowd until the end.

Mr. Seyhoun has showcased the Persian contribution to the international community through his genius and unique artistic creations.   This fundraising gala will be followed, on Sunday October 2, 2011, by the first-time ever screening of a special film production by Majid Mahichi and Sharareh Soltani from Parvaz TV Film Corporation in Vancouver, Canada, narrating Seyhoun's accomplished life and works of architecture, paintings, and drawings.   To recognize the prestigious Hines College of Architecture, this exclusive viewing will take place in the Theatre Hall of the Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston (Main Campus) from 2-4 p.m. then followed by a public screening from 4-6 p.m.   In close collaboration with the University of Houston - Hines College of Architecture, ICF has proudly established a $25,000 Endowment in order to award the The Houshang Seyhoun Scholarship for Excellence in Architecture to student projects inspired by Houshang Seyhoun’s collective works. To ensure the immediate awarding of the scholarship, ICF has guaranteed an annual $1,000 award for the next five years until the minimum endowment of $25,000 has been reached and matured through public contributions.   All who appreciate ICF's cultural and community services are encouraged to support this special event with their generous financial contribution and active participation in the First Annual Gala. Shahnameh Workshop

Host: ICF ICF Office: 713-590-9770 The Shahnameh or The Epic of Kings is deservedly one of the classic masterpieces in the world literature. It illustrates tales of ancient Persian heroes and heroins. The fascinating stories and the poet's mastery of narration bring the legendary characters to life and mesmerize the reader throughout the book. The significance of this work is that during the period that Arabic language was known as the main language of science and literature, Ferdowsi used few Arabic words in his masterpiece. As Ferdowsi himself says "Persian language is revived by this work". ICF is glad to present a monthly workshop on the Shahnameh. Nowruz Festival

Bring your friends to Discovery Green, and let's celebrate one of the oldest continuous festivals in human history together. This year, our main entertainer will be none other than Black Cats, who will be performing after the New Year countdown at 6:21 pm. We have also proudly added comedian K-Von to our lineup of performers, who will be performing before the New Year countdown. Houston's own Deejay Empire will keep us moving the entire day. We also have some amazing New Year countdown events planned so please plan on being in the park with us before 5 pm. This includes a white dove release to signify peace and unity of all human beings.
